Vaizey claims UK’s broadband system is “on target”

Despite reports of the government’s attempts to provide the UK with the best broadband in Europe faltering, communications minister, Ed Vaizey has said that the government is on track and committed to fulfilling its promise by the stated 2015.
Vaizey seems very confident that by 2015 we will be miles ahead of the rest of Europe with not only broadband speed but coverage. When questioned on the matter he simply said: “We believe we are on target to achieve that.”
Unfortunately, Akamai, an independent reviewer of science and technology, ranked the UK’s broadband speed as number 25 in Europe, which when considering the competitors seems unimpressive.
Hopefully we will see a more accurate representation of our current and future broadband capabilities when the European Commission publishes its broadband international comparisons paper later in the year. Given the size of the UK and the demand for high speed internet, it is clearly important we leap-frog our way up rankings for good broadband in Europe.
